History Of Bottled Water

While it may seem like bottled water is something that doesn't date back very far, the history of bottled water goes all the way back to ancient times. At the dawn of humanity, mankind needed a way to transport water from one place to another. Primitive humans used animal skins and other vessels made from natural materials to carry the water from its original source to their camps and villages. In Greco-Roman times, natural spring water would be carried long distances from the springs to the villages using large clay jugs.

While bottled water was being enjoyed as early as the 15th century in Europe, the 19th century was when the bottled water boom began. For example, the Poland Spring Bottled Water Company in Maine began in 1845 when vacationers visiting the resort wanted a way to take the water found there back home with them. The first bottle of Perrier mineral water was bottled in 1863. Deer Park is another bottled water company that got its start during this century as it was founded in 1873. Deer Park in western Maryland was so popular that even President Taft vacationed there.

In the 20th century bottled water became even more popular and widespread. In 1900, Deer Park bottled water was served on the B & O Railroad to the first class section. 1905 saw the opening of the Ozarka bottled water company in Texas. In 1976 Perrier water was imported to the United States through Great Waters of France, Inc. Today, these brands and more are under the umbrella company of Nestle Waters North America. Nestle Waters North America serves the bottled water needs of consumers all over the nation.

The history of bottled water doesn't end there. In the past decade or so we have seen the bottled water market grow bigger than ever. It is estimated that in 2006 bottled water sales hit $10 billion dollars and are expected only to grow larger in the future. Today there are many different brands and types of bottled water easily accessible to consumers, including glacier water, spring water, mineral water, sparkling water, oxygenated water, vitamin enriched water and more. You can even buy flavored powder containing vitamins and minerals that is added to plain water to give it more appeal. From the earliest days to modern times, many types of bottled water have been popular with consumers all over the globe.
