Bottled Water Facts

If you are torn between bottled and tap water, reading some bottled water facts can be helpful. One misconception that many people have is that tap water is somehow unhealthy for them. The Environmental Protection Agency has strict guidelines regarding water health and safety in municipal locations. For example, municipal tap water cannot contain any e. coli bacteria, fecal coliform or any other dangerous contaminants. The water must be filtered effectively before being qualified as suitable to drink. There are enough regulations in place to make city tap water safe.

However, there are still some reasons why you may want to to choose bottled water. Bottled water comes in many different varieties including spring, mineral and even sparkling. You may find that different types of bottled water taste differently. Bottled water is convenient, and is easy to take along with you wherever you go. In addition, it is readily available in many stores. Some bottled water contains natural minerals, while other brands have minerals and nutrients added. There are even new vitamin enriched waters on the market that provide flavor with nutrition. You can even buy portable pouches of flavored powder that can be added to any bottle of water and give flavor and nutrients.

The business of bottled water is one that is worth billions. In 2006 alone over $10 billion worth of bottled water was sold. It is estimated that this number will only climb higher as time goes on. One question this raises is the effect of the plastic on the environment. The best thing to do is take your plastic bottles to a recycling facility. You certainly don't want to reuse the bottles for other beverages. While this sounds like a frugal thing to do, it can be harmful because bacteria can grow inside the bottles. In addition, the plastic can break down after washings and chemicals can get into the water.

To learn more bottled water facts, you may want to do some additional research. The EPA and FDA offer plenty of online information about tap and bottled water. In addition, the many bottled water companies on the market have websites where you can learn more information about their particular products. The best thing to do when choosing bottled water is learn as much as you can so you can make an educated choice about the type of water that is best for you and your family.
